At St Chad’s CE (Cont) Nursery and Infant are proud to be part of the Derby City Children’s University.
In our school we have always believed that Out of Lesson Time Learning is important. So what is different about the Children’s University?
Children are fully involved in the ‘WHOLE’ theme reflecting and evaluating their own achievements each week using the code of conduct against the 5 themes- Working Together, Helping Each Other, On Time, Listening and Learning, Enjoying and Achieving.
- Children enjoy completing their learning logs.
They make their own assessments about what they have learned.
- Children feel part of a team or a family.
Some children have the opportunity to learn with other members of their family or friends.
Staff and children try out and share new ideas which are put into modules These are put through a rigorous moderation process to receive accreditation.
- School has fantastic support from the Out of School Development workers
There is a file and CD- Rom containing all administrative materials needed so that work for school coordinators is kept to a minimum.
- Children have a voice
Two children are school representatives are part of the Children’s University Youth Forum.
Children’s achievements are celebrated Children receive certificates and medals as they build up points. They attend a very grand ceremony- fantastic!
How did we make it work?
We began with a Derby Children’s University launch with children and parents, again introducing the WHOLE theme. We introduced 2 modules to begin with and we now have 12. We planned times for the modules to suit parents and staff needs. Our sessions are 10 x 30 minutes per term. We have teachers, teaching assistants and governors leading the modules.
We are now looking at other activities and initiatives to widen the range of interests further.
Thankyou To Philippa and Karin for your inspiration, support, and encouragement- it has been fantastic!!!
